CITY RECEIVES 'WELL CITY" AWARD July 2011 -
The City of Port Angeles has earned a Well City Award from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC), Employee Benefit Trust. Port Angeles is one of 82 cities receiving the award, which is based on meeting stringent “Best Practices” standards in employee health promotion.
Cities earning this coveted award receive a 2% premium reduction on medical insurance coverage for employees and spouses starting in 2012. For the City of Port Angeles, this means a savings of approximately $41,425.
The City had to meet nine wellness standards including developing policies and procedures, gaining management support, creating a wellness committee, and building an infrastructure of health with plans and activities, and evaluating progress and outcomes.
A total of 79 Trust-insured cities earned the 2011 WellCity Award and are receiving a 2% premium discount on their 2012 Regence & Asuris medical premiums. View the list.....
“While the premium discount is a considerable motivation in times of strained budgets, the rewards go beyond the monetary savings”, said Mike McCarty, CEO of the AWC. “A city that works on employee health see increases in productivity, improved morale, retention, and decreases in absenteeism and workers compensation claims”, McCarty said.

The City's Wellness Committee offered many activities and educational information to employees and spouses including on-site health screening, on-line health questionnaire, a City-wide softball game and barbeque, noon-time walks, ride your bike to work month, and healthy lifestyle campaigns. Simple lifestyle changes in diet, exercise, education of health risk factors and preventive care have long-term benefits. The City is dedicated to continued Wellness and Health Promotion for employees.
AWC was founded in 1933 as a private, non-profit corporation that provides a legislative representation, educational training for cities; insurances, and other related services for Washington cities and towns. The AWC Benefit Trust provides health benefits for over 15,000 employees.

RESULTS of COMMUNITY SURVEY on BUDGET PRIORITIES August 28, 2010 - In developing the 2011 City Budget, the City Council and City staff recognized that certain difficult financial decisions would need to be made in order to create a balanced budget without requiring any tax increases. It was decided that public input was critical to guide the City in this challenging process, in order to better understand community priorities. Several methods were initiated to solicit this public input; these included conducting a town meeting on the budget and City Council members attending the Farmers' Market on several Saturdays to solicit feedback on the budget.......
A total of over 1400 survey forms were completed, which represents about 15% of the total households in Port Angeles. This included 998 responses from the utility bill insert, 382 responses on-line, and 82 responses to the printed survey forms. This is an excellent response rate and confirms the high level of interest that local citizens have in their city government. With this high level of response, the priorities that have been identified will be very useful to the City Council and City staff in the development of the 2011 Budget.......
City Council will be discussing the results of the survey at their special meeting on Tuesday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m.
