Burn ban is in effect.Permanent Burn Ban As Of January 1, 2001
As of January 1, 2001, burning of both yard and land clearing debris was prohibited in the City of Port Angeles and its adjacent urban growth areas. Also banned in these areas are steel burn barrels and the burning of household trash, demolition debris, and lumber scraps.

For those areas outside the City of Port Angeles and its urban growth areas, outdoor burning will still be allowed for yard debris and land clearing.

For regulations concerning areas east of Deer Park, please contact Clallam County Fire District # 3 at www.clallamfire3.org or 683-4242. For other areas adjacent to the City of Port Angeles, contact Clallam County Fire District #2 at www.clallamfire2.org or 457-7725. However, the permanent ban on the use of steel burn barrels and burning of household trash, demolition debris, and lumber scraps also applies.

The burn ban is the result of the Washington Clean Air Act which in part limits outdoor burning in an effort to protect public health. Outdoor burning has been shown to be responsible for approximately 10% of the states' air pollution emitting fine particles, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds that have proven to be harmful. Especially affected are children, the elderly, and people with heart and respiratory problems. For more information on air pollution control, visit www.oapca.org.

While the ban on outdoor burning will unquestionably improve our air quality, it will also require changes in the elimination of both yard debris and land clearing debris. The City is taking a look at its role in exploring alternatives to the removal of yard and land clearing debris that will become necessary as a result of the permanent burn ban.

Listed below are existing alternatives to outdoor burning which are currently available through the City and local businesses. You can call the businesses listed below for additional information on their services.

If you have any questions on the burn ban, or can provide input regarding alternatives to outdoor burning, contact the Port Angeles Fire Department by email at Fire Prevention or phone us at (360) 417-4655.
