FAQs

Your Fire Department is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the citizens and visitors of the City while providing a board range of services designed to save lives and property.

Disaster Preparedness
Emergency response professionals must spend a great deal of time doing "what if" thinking, reviewing for possible disasters that could call for extraordinary response and then evaluating how well prepared they are for that occurrence. The same should be true for a homeowner who needs to ask "what if." The following information might be helpful in preparing for a particular event.

For additional information, see the Emergency Planning Checklist.

  • Be prepared for after shocks.
  • After the earthquake, check yourself and those around you for injuries.
  • Use the telephone only to report a life threatening emergency to 9-1-1.
  • If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, open a window and leave the building. Shut off the main gas valve outside.
  • Try to make contact with your out of area phone contact and continue to monitor radio 1290 AM or 1450 AM.

Hazardous Materials

  • Store hazardous materials in a cool dry place.
  • Carefully read the product label and directions for use.
  • Should you have a chemical reaction causing irritation and shortness of breath, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Winter Storms

Prepare ahead for winter storms and dangerous conditionsBEFORE: 1) Purchase a battery powered radio and tune into 1290 AM or 1450 AM; 2) have an alternate heat source and supply for fuel; 3) have flashlights with extra batteries.

DURING: 1) Listen to your local radio station for emergency information; 2) wear several layers of loose fitting lightweight, warm clothing; 3) wear a cap.

Do not overexert if shoveling snow. Watch for symptoms of frost bite and hypothermia. Signs of hypothermia are uncontrollable shivering, slowed speech, memory lapses, drowsiness and exhaustion.

If in a vehicle:

  • Stay on the main road.
  • If trapped in a blizzard, clear your tail pipe, run engine and heater ten minutes each hour. Open windows slightly and maintain body heat. Keep dome light on at night so work crews can see your vehicle.
