Basketball Tournament Schedule 2009-2010
Basketball shoesOur basketball tournaments offer the opportunity for boys and girls from 5th grade all the way up to high school to participate.

All tournaments have a $225.00 entry fee with a four game guarantee. Sponsor's plaques will be awarded to first place and awards for other placings will be determined on the number of entrants. Championship shirts will be given in all divisions.

TREE DONATED TO CITY FOR HOLIDAY DISPLAY
City Christmas Tree for Holiday DisplayOctober 29, 2009 - Darrell and Jean Fairchild, of Port Angeles, have donated a Noble Fir tree to the City for this year's holiday display at the Conrad Dyer Memorial Fountain on Laurel Street in downtown Port Angeles.

The 35 to 40 foot tree will be put into place by City crews on Friday, November 20, and decorated in time for the tree lighting ceremony on November 28. The lighting of this special tree during the Thanksgiving weekend traditionally signals the beginning of the holiday season in Port Angeles.

The Fairchilds will be recognized by special proclamation from the Mayor and a photo of the tree will also be featured later on the City's website.

Happy Holidays (just a little bit early) from the City of Port Angeles!

NEW PICKLE BALL COURTS AT ELKS PLAYFIELD
June 2009 - Six new pickle ball courts were recently finished at Elks Playfield. This project was made possible in part by donations from the community and local players. The new courts were celebrated on July 12, 2009 as part of the rededication celebration of Elks Memorial Playfield.

Elks Playfield is located at 13th & Cedar Streets in Port Angeles.

WSMPD AGENDA & MEETING INFORMATION PACKET
The WSMPD meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. in County Commissioner's Meeting Room located in the Clallam County Courthouse at 223 E. 4th Street in Port Angeles.

Meeting packet information, such as the agenda and information materials - are usually available the Friday before each meeting. The Clallam County Commissioner's office has been designated for administrative clerk services for the District. Please contact:

CONCRETE PLANTER-BENCH DONATED TO CITY PARKS
Planter-Bench donationBlake Sand & Gravel and the Rotary Club of Port Angeles have generously donated a concrete planter-bench to the City of Port Angeles.

On November 24, 2008, the 1800 pound unit was delivered and placed into position by special truck and forklift courtesy of Blake Sand & Gravel to the Valley Creek Estuary Park located on West Front Street.

Corey Delikat, Superintendent of Streets & Parks accepted the donation on behalf of the City. The concrete aggregate unit will be planted with flowers in the spring as part of the City's beautification program.

Special thanks to Blake Sand & Gravel and the Rotary Club of Port Angeles for their generous donation.


CITY PRESENTS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
Corey DelikatCorey Delikat, Public Works & Utilities Superintendent of Parks and Streets has been awarded the City's Distinguished Service Award for 2007.

The Distinguished Service Award is the highest level of award for a City employee or team of employees. The recipient is chosen by a committee composed of the City Manager, a City Councilmember, and an outside member of the community. Former Mayor, Glenn Wiggins, served as the committee's community representative.

Delikat was selected from a group of 18 employees or teams that had received special recognition during 2007..........Click for the rest of the story....

FAMILY FUN DAY! - August 1, 2009!
Try the Rat Race Obstacle Course!This is a terrific opportunity to get out and play with the kids!

Celebration of youth and families is coming up on August 1, 2009 at the City of Port Angeles Recreation Division's Family Fun Day. This special event is held annually at Erickson Park located on Race Street between 2nd & 4th Streets.

Adrenaline Rush Obstacle Course, Tree House Slide, Survivor Obstacle Course, Funny Farm Bounce & Slide Combo, Circus Train, the Rock Wall and lots more fun will be on hand. After you work up an appetite enjoy hot dogs for $1.00, polish dogs for $1.50, pop for 75 cents and bottled water for $1.00 each.

Entry is free with donations gladly accepted - so plan to join us on August 1 from 1pm to 5pm for some good Family Fun!

EDIZ HOOK BOAT LAUNCH DAILY FEES & YEARLY PASSES
Ediz Hook Boat Launch areaDaily fees to launch a boat at the Ediz Hook Boat Launch are $10.00 and yearly passes are available for $40.00. Daily fees can be deposited in the drop box at the boat launch area.
Yearly passes are effective for one year from the date of purchase and may be purchased at the City of Port Angeles Recreation office in the Vern Burton Memorial Community Center.

Note: Both vehicle and boat trailer license plate numbers are required when applying for the yearly license.
A paper receipt will be issued for immediate use and the laminated permit will be mailed to you within approximately 10 days. After launching your vehicle, please place the receipt or permit on the dashboard of your vehicle.

Civic FieldCivic Field is a multi-purpose sports field and stadium suitable for football, baseball or soccer.

There is covered seating for 2500 and field lighting for evening events. The facility is located on 4th & Race Streets.

All of Port Angeles High School's home games for soccer, baseball and football are played here.

The City's Park staff has been working hard to prepare City athletic fields for another busy season of baseball tournaments.

SHANE PARK TENNIS COURTS REOPEN
Shane Park was constructed by the City of Port Angeles and originally opened in July of 1974. The park is used consistently by multiple groups for a variety of sports and recreational activities including tennis, softball, youth baseball, and soccer.

"These new courts are just gorgeous", said Peninsula Tennis Club president, Laurel Cripe.

The Peninsula Tennis Club will be using the Shane Park courts as part of their World Tennis Team League that involves 9 teams and over 50 players from Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend.

This project, funded entirely by the City of Port Angeles, completely resurfaced both courts. New net posts and nets have been installed along with fresh, white court lines.

 

Other recent improvements to the park include a new sand base drainage system on the entire field, newly renovated infields, a new home run fence, and bollards that completely surround and protect the park. If you haven't been to Shane Park recently, now is a great time to visit.

CITY EMPLOYEE EARNS PROFESSIONAL ARBORIST CERTIFICATION
May 1, 2007
Brooke KeohokaloleBrooke Keohokalole, Parks Facility Caretaker for the City of Port Angeles, recently demonstrated professional competency by successfully completing the Certified Arborist examination administered through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

The purpose of the ISA Certification Program is to improve the level of knowledge and standard of practice within the tree care profession.

It is designed to assist the public in identifying those professionals in arboriculture who have demonstrated, through a professionally developed examination and education program, a thorough knowledge of tree care practices.

The International Society of Arboriculture is a scientific and educational organization devoted to the dissemination of information in the care and preservation of shade and ornamental trees.

Brooke Keohokalole has been in the Parks Division of the City of Port Angeles for 7 years.

SHANE PARK IMPROVEMENTS COMPLETE - Mayor Cuts Ribbon
April 28, 2007
Shane Park was constructed by the City of Port Angeles was originally opened in July of 1974. The park is used consistently by multiple groups for a variety of sports and recreational activities including tennis, softball, youth baseball, and soccer.

Ribbon CuttingFor the last 18 months, numerous volunteers and local businesses have contributed their time and over $3,000 towards the construction of four new dugouts built in partnership with the City.

Sponsors that donated directly to the construction of the dugouts are: Wal-Mart, Soroptimist Jet Set, First Federal Savings & Loan, the Bravettes, the Lower Elwha Kallam Tribe, Feeley Construction, Olympic Concrete, Angeles Concrete and Swain's.

Other work provided by the City includes a new sand base drainage system on the entire field, newly renovated infields, a new home run fence, soon-to-be newly re-surfaced tennis courts, and bollards that completely surround and protect the park.

Park is Popular
In an average year, 44 local softball teams use the facility and welcome 30 out-of-town teams. Over 250 softball games are played at Shane Park in a year. Add in all the practice time and junior soccer games and the park becomes a very busy place. Walkers can also enjoy the trail that goes around and through the park. Three times around the loop equals one mile.

The City honors the volunteers that gave so generously of their time and the local businesses that provided the resources to further enhance Shane Park. If you haven't been to Shane Park recently, now is a great time to visit.

Work Party Cleans Up Erickson Park After Windstorm
On December 23, 2006 a work party between the Rotary, Kiwanis and Dream Playground Foundation drew about 25 people who picked up branches and also cleaned the entire tennis court area.

Parks Maintenance Staff followed a few days later to pick up the piles of debris.

Parks & Recreation Staffs Receive Award
The staffs of both the Parks Division and Recreation Division were recently recognized by the Port Angeles Downtown Association with their Downtown Partner Award.

The award was given for "Exemplary Dedication and Contribution to the Downtown Port Angeles Mainstreet Program".

City Receives Community Service Recognition from Rotary Club

On December 14, 2005 City of Port Angeles Public Works & Utilities Park Maintenance workers Leon Leonard, Facility Caretaker and Corey Delikat, Leadworker attended a Rotary luncheon to accept a Community Service Recognition award.

The award recognized their work on the Loomis Restroom Project at Lincoln Park.

Corey and Leon have been instrumental in working with the Rotary Club in the installation of the new sewer line, site preparation for the restroom and installation of the building foundation.

They will also provide the Rotary with assistance in the other construction phases of the building.

Gift Catalog & Memorials
The Community Parks Gift Project provides an opportunity for residents to be personally involved in maintaining the special character of our community. From trees to trails, drinking fountains to outdoor play equipment, the Gift Project catalog contains a partial listing of those projects within our parks that need funding. Our area offers a wide range of parks and recreational facilities, including four regional parks, ten neighborhood parks, five viewpoints, three memorial/historical sites, a stadium, pool, community center and senior services community complex.

FlowersThe intent of this program is to give individuals, organizations and businesses an opportunity to support those projects and facilities of greatest interest. A gift can be made in memory of a loved one, in the name of the donor, or remain anonymous. Gift possibilities are many and varied, ranging from benches and barbecues to playground equipment, William Shore Memorial Pool, larger capital improvement projects, outdoor play equipment and the Vern Burton memorial Community Center.

Memorial & Donation Policy
The Parks Commission adopted a new policy for memorials and donations as of October 20, 2005.

Pink flowersThe purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines, standards and procedures for the installation and care of donated park improvements, either as a result of a cash or physical property donation.

These donations may include, but are not limited to, park benches, bicycle racks, picnic tables, public art, monuments (by exception only), drinking fountains, flags, and other types of park trails accessories. This policy does not apply to buildings or land.

The City desires to encourage donations while at the same time manage aesthetic impacts and mitigate on-going maintenance cost.

Guidelines established by this policy will apply to all donations made after the effective date of this policy. Donations made prior to the adoption of this policy shall be subject to applicable sections of this policy. This policy is also designed to provide guidelines for individuals or groups should they desire to decorate, landscape or adorn a donation, such as a tree, bench, or picnic table on city owned property.

Standards established by this policy will apply to purchased equipment, installation techniques, donation acknowledgements, decoration and long term care of all donations made after the adoption of this policy.

Skate Board Park
Skate Board Park project in progress.

Have you heard the buzz? Our skate park is known as one of the top skate parks within the Pacific Northwest thanks to its three-bowl layout and extra smooth concrete.

While the City of Port Angeles donated the land space for the skate board park, the Rotary Club headed the fund raising process for the $200,000 project. Ground was broken on the project in April 2005 with the park being officially open on Labor Day of 2005.

The park will be open daily from 8am until dusk and is now under the managed by the City Recreation Division of the Public Works Department.
