The Records Division of the Port Angeles Police Department is often the public's first contact with this agency. The Records Division maintains a high level of customer service to everyone who comes to the station.
As an integral component in the operation of the Department, the function of this division is to provide a variety of services to the public, commissioned officers, prosecutors, attorneys, insurance companies, City departments, and other police agencies.
Records Specialists are exceptional personnel and handle an extremely heavy workload.
In addition to answering all non-emergency phone calls and staffing the public access counter, employees from this division also provide a variety of other services that are listed below.

A vehicle accident report must be completed if the damage to at least one vehicle exceeds $750 damage. If an officer was called to the scene of an accident, you do not need to complete a citizens report form.
If the accident was a result of a hit and run, you should contact the communications center and speak with an officer. If an officer was not called to the scene of an accident and there was over $750 damage, you and any other drivers should complete a report form to be mailed to the Washington State Patrol.
You may pick up a report form in the Police Department lobby during business hours or from the bin located on the wall outside the door of the police department. For further information regarding vehicle accident reports, you may contact the Records Division at 417-4915.
Fingerprinting for employment, identification or background check purposes is provided between the hours of 9:00 am through 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday for a fee of $25.
Concealed pistol licenses are issued by the Port Angeles Police Department for city residents only. Anyone living outside the city limits, but within Clallam County must contact the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
All applicants must complete an application and have a background check including fingerprinting. New applications are $60, renewals are issued up to 90 days before the expiration date at a cost of $32 and late renewals up to 90 days late are $42. Applications are accepted during the hours of 9 am through 3 pm with licenses usually issued the same day.
Firearm Permit FireArm Permits (see below for Concealed Pistol Licenses)… Firearms Dealer licenses are also issued by the Port Angeles Police Department for Firearms Dealers within the City Limits of Port Angeles for a fee of $125 per year. A dealer must have a valid Federal Firearms Dealer License to be eligible.
A portion of the Records division time is spent disseminating criminal history Information.
Background checks are available through the Records Division for Port Angeles Police Department criminal history information only. A name and date of birth for the person you are inquiring about is required. The cost is $5 and you must come the Police Department Records Division to obtain this information. You may also be interested in using the Washington Access To Criminal History, also known as the WATCH program, through the Washington State Patrol website. The website address is www.wa.gov/wsp.
About Criminal Histories...
The Washington State Patrol Identification and Criminal History Section is the statewide repository for fingerprint-based criminal history record information (CHRI). Local criminal justice agencies are required by law to submit felony and gross misdemeanor arrest and disposition information to the State Patrol, where it is included in a CHRI data base.
Who May Request CHRI?
Certified criminal justice agencies may request and receive unrestricted CHRI from the Identification and Criminal History Section for criminal justice purposes. The public may request and receive CHRI for non-criminal justice purposes, but it is limited to conviction information only.
Conviction CHRI is defined in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 10.97.030, and it relates to an incident that has led to a conviction or other disposition adverse to the subject. In addition to the conviction CHRI, non-criminal justice requestors (the public) may receive a record showing pending arrest offenses under one year old without disposition, and if the subject is a registered sex offender or kidnapper.
Port Angeles Police can only disseminate Port Angeles Police Criminal History. To obtain Washington State criminal history information, contact the Washington State Patrol in Olympia. To get criminal history for the United States contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Records division of the Port Angeles Police Department can provide you with addresses and information to contact the state and FBI.
Police Report Requests Police reports may be requested in the Police Department Records Division between the hours of 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday.
Evidence Unit The P.A.P.D. Property and Evidence Unit supports the 28 commissioned officers of the Police Department and the citizens of Port Angeles with their property/evidence needs. A member of the Records staff is assigned full time to Property and Evidence.
As has been the situation for several years, efficient storage and retrieval of property and evidence is seriously hampered by lack of space. In a few instances, there has been a reduction in the bulk of evidence requiring storage space in the property room. Photographs and film are now stored in a separate secure location. Many photographs are now digital and are stored on discs, further reducing space requirements. Most interviews are now recorded digitally. This has also reduced and simplified storage.
Drugs require storage at a high level of security. All such storage space is always full. Drugs from hundreds of closed cases were destroyed this year by taking them to the Regional Waste Facility in Spokane. This is the only public facility in Washington State available to law enforcement agencies for this purpose. The perpetually high volume of drug cases also brings with it other property that must be stored as evidence, from bulky marijuana growing equipment to large amounts of recovered stolen property. As a sidelight, this year over $7,000 was forfeited to the City through drug seizures.
There’s no doubt about it. Lack of storage remains the number one problem facing the property custodian.
PARKING TICKETS Contact the Police Department Records Division for questions regarding parking violations at 360-417-4915 Monday through Friday between 8 AM and 5 PM or in person in the Police Lobby between 9 am and 3 pm Monday through Friday.
Payments can be mailed or dropped in the drop box. All parking violations must be paid within 15 days or a $25 penalty is added.
