POLLUTION PREVENTION is reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production processes, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.
The City of Port Angeles received a grant from the Washington Department of Ecology to provide no-charge, on-site advice to small businesses that generate dangerous wastes.
The goal of this grant funded program is to help Port Angeles businesses avoid polluting local waters, reduce the impacts of storm water pollution, and eliminate potential sources of toxic materials and dangerous waste.
POLLUTION PREVENTION SPECIALIST - READY TO ASSIST YOU
David Freed is the City's new Pollution Prevention Specialist. He will also help businesses understand regulations about dangerous waste and implement pollution prevention practices. His position is 100% grant funded.
The $154,700 grant pays the whole cost of hiring a Pollution Prevention Specialist, who will help businesses address their dangerous waste issues beginning in March. The grant is funded through the end of June 2013.
As part of Ecology's Local Source Control Partnership, the City's specialist will have access to the resources and expertise of twenty five partner jurisdictions around Puget Sound and the Spokane River. The goal is to protect water quality and help businesses deal with pollution at its source, before it pollutes local waters.
