The Water Utility maintains the city drinking water system from a well on the Elwha River to the meter by your house.

Water Utility StaffThe water system has approximately 189 miles of pipe ranging from 2 to 30 inches in diameter, 3 water booster pump stations, 5 reservoirs with 18 million gallons of storage and about 7,928 service connections.

The water is disinfected using sodium hypochlorite (household bleach) and no other chemicals are added. The water supply is obtained from a 60 foot deep Collector Well next to the Elwha River which is a few miles west of town. The well and pumping system is designed to provide 11 million gallons per day (mgd).

The Water Utility maintains the city drinking water systemWater is measured in cubic feet (cf). There are 7-1/2 gallons in one cubic foot. Your base rate per month is determined by the size of your service line.

Most homes have 3/4" service with a 5/8" meter. The City also supplies water to limited areas outside the city limits. Rates are based on water usage..... Click for more information...

CITY WATER TO INCLUDE LEAD AND COPPER PROTECTION
On June 23, 2008 the City of Port Angeles' Water Utility will take the next step in addressing elevated levels of copper in some customers' residential drinking water with the addition of Orthophosphate at the City's water supply source. This action will bring the City of Port Angeles into compliance with an agreed order with the Washington State Department of Health, and Federal guidelines for lead and copper in drinking water.

WaterOrthophosphate is a drinking water approved product, commonly used in water systems, that coats the water distribution lines preventing corrosion of metal piping systems and protecting consumers from elevated levels of lead and copper.

Phosphate and phosphoric acid are essential human nutrients and are naturally present in a wide variety of foods. The amount of phosphate in the orthophosphate used to treat drinking water represents only a small fraction (approximately 1%) of the phosphate in a normal daily diet.

For more information about the potential health effects of copper or lead in drinking water please visit the Washington State Department of Health's Office of Drinking Water website at http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/dw/default.htm for detailed information. The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services Drinking Water program can be contacted at 360-417-2377 for additional questions regarding safe drinking water.

The City of Port Angeles will be monitoring appropriate Water Quality parameters to make sure the treatment equipment is operating as designed. For more information about this process or other water quality issues please contact Ernie Klimek, City Water/Wastewater Collection Superintendent at 360.417.4855 or via e-mail at .

City of Port Angeles and Clallam County PUD Reach Water Agreement
The City of Port Angeles and the Clallam County Public Utility District have reached agreement on a 30-year minimum term wholesale water contract.

City of Port Angeles LogoCitizens between the City of Port Angeles eastern boundary and the west bank of Morse Creek will benefit by receiving high quality drinking water that meets Washington State Department of Health and US Environmental Protection standards.

Mayor Karen Rogers, said, “When agencies work together - everyone benefits as an inclusive community. As stewards, good policies and partnerships result in a community where the public's interests and needs come first.”

Clallam County PUD logo
Ted Simpson, PUD Board of Commissioners' President, added, “ This long-term contract serves the people well. They are the ones who really benefit. ”

The agreement brings certainty to both organizations and provides for the area's water needs for a minimum of the next 30 years. A key provision of the agreement requires the construction of a reservoir for meeting current and future water flows for fighting fires. It also provides for the orderly transfer of facilities when City boundaries are changed.
